چکیده

We study discrete panel data methods where unobserved heterogeneity is revealed in a first step, environments population not discrete. focus on two?step grouped fixed?effects (GFE) estimators, individuals are classified into groups using kmeans clustering, and the model then estimated allowing for group?specific heterogeneity. Our framework relies two key properties: function—possibly nonlinear time?varying—of low?dimensional continuous latent type, informative moments available classification. illustrate method of wages labor market participation, probit with time?varying derive asymptotic expansions GFE estimators as number grows dimensions panel. propose data?driven rule groups, discuss bias reduction inference.

Discretizing Unobserved Heterogeneity∗

We study panel data estimators based on a discretization of unobserved heterogeneity when individual heterogeneity is not necessarily discrete in the population. We focus on two-step grouped-fixed effects estimators, where individuals are classified into groups in a first step using kmeans clustering, and the model is estimated in a second step allowing for group-specific heterogeneity. We anal...

Unobserved Heterogeneity in Matching Games

Agents in two-sided matching games vary in characteristics that are unobservable in typical data on matching markets. We investigate the identification of the distribution of these unobserved characteristics using data on who matches with whom. The distribution of match-specific unobservables cannot be fully recovered without information on unmatched agents, but the distribution of a combinatio...

Nonparametric Discrete Choice Models with Unobserved Heterogeneity

In this research, we provide a new method to estimate discrete choice models with unobserved heterogeneity that can be used with either cross-sectional or panel data. The method imposes nonparametric assumptions on the systematic subutility functions and on the distributions of the unobservable random vectors and the heterogeneity parameter. The estimators are computationally feasible and stron...

Estimating Unobserved Individual Heterogeneity through Pairwise Comparisons

This paper proposes a new methodology to study environments with unobserved agent heterogeneity. We focus on the settings where the heterogeneous factor takes values from an unknown finite set, and the economic model yields testable implications in the form of pairwise inequalities. The method produces a consistent classification of economic agents according to their unobserved types. The paper...

Microsimulations in the Presence of Unobserved Heterogeneity

While econometric models routinely incorporate unobserved heterogeneity, microsimulations that are based on historical data rarely do so. At issue is that an individual’s history of outcomes contains information about that person’s heterogeneity draw, implying that the individual’s value may not be drawn randomly from the population distribution. Failure to account for heterogeneity may bias be...
